Monday Musings

A write up on current events.

It might be bittersweets here in the U.S., but the news on Sochi does not make this upcoming Olympics sound like a treat to be at, nor make Russia sound very nice. Between the weird toilet stories and the plans to kill off local dogs by the irresponsible city instead of getting them adopted out on top of the boasting about this being the most expensive Olympics ever, Sochi just doesn’t sound fun.

The stories about the dogs being culled is especially tough to hear because, in the story it is admitted that the Russians treat the animals like disposable toys. They get them and then drop them. So logically, these dogs are not all rabid crazy street dogs. Some of them are thrown off pets which is why it is depressing to hear that they will be culled.

Saturday Night Live

Lorne Michaels famous Saturday Night Live producer, admitted that it’s easier to pick on Republicans because they don’t take it as seriously when they get made fun of and find it amusing – that’s true. I’ve personally never taken Saturday Night Live seriously when they made fun of Republicans nor any other media that’s chosen to take aim at the party. I find The Colbert Report to be hilarious which always mystified my Democratic friends in the area. And most Republicans just laugh at comedy routines, if they are good comedy – meant for laughter and worth laughing at – now Dems. This blogger has always found Dems to have a much harder time taking a good poke of humor. Republicans have been accused of just not being smart enough to know we were being made fun of, but that is incorrect.

Lorne Michaels:

“Republicans are easier for us than Democrats,” says Michaels. “Democrats tend to take it personally; Republicans think it’s funny.”

You can read The Weekly Standard interview here.

If you still don’t believe me, look below. A friend of mine has his Stephen Colbert parody book on the same shelf as books by Laura Bush, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney and the bible.

The Super Bowl

So it’s the year of the Horse on the Chinese Calendar which means, the Broncos should have won, right? Ehehehehe. Actually, this blogger incorrectly thought that the calendar meant your sign would have it’s year, but in fact other signs may be more successful in your sign’s year, but not your sign. Sorry!

Bruno Mars performance last night was excellent and probably the most geared towards women in years. Although Madonna’s was one of the more interesting ones a few years back.

Happy Monday!

Some Insults, Just Aren’t –

Some insults just don’t really come across as true insults -this short music video parody from SNL portrays Speaker of the House John Boehner as a party boy and Michele Bachmann as a variation of Miley Cyrus. The song used is a parody version of Miley Cyrus’  ”It’s Our Party.”

It is about the government shut down and portrays Bachmann and Boehner as being irresponsible party happy people. In the background you see a terrified Obama looking in from the outside of the house. The thing is, the video is so ridiculous it’s hard to take it seriously as a true insult. And the song referenced from Cyrus has a multitude of deeper sadder meanings about the party life. So how can you take it seriously? And would you? You can’t.

Additionally, the last time this writer saw a major politician portrayed as a party boy on SNL – it was George W. Bush in 2004 – and he won the presidential race that year.
